For most of the summer, our interns are camping out in the backcountry, spending long days doing the hard work it takes to reclaim our region's disappearing trails.
They spend anywhere from 8 to 14 days on those work hitches, and after a day to themselves afterward, we round out their summer with a lineup of programs meant to expand their horizons and share the magic of public lands. Some examples from years previous:
- Visits to places like Crater Lake, the Redwoods, and the Oregon Coast. Along the way they meet with land managers
- Play days rafting the Rogue, paddling a lake, or splashing in the surf of the Pacific
- Lectures from professionals in a variety of fields
- Classroom opportunities for those wanting to further their GIS skills or earn field certifications through our Forest Service training program
And we feed them. A lot, because they're hungry. And let's face it. There's no a foundation or a federal agency that has said, "Yes, we want to feed your interns lunch and fund their outdoor pursuits on days they're not working." That's why we need community support to make 2024 another amazing summer for our Wilderness Corps interns.
